Nearly $30,000

That's what we spent out-of-pocket on IVF treatments/medication last year and have absolutely nothing to show for it. The exact number was $29,000 something. And, actually, it was probably more than that - I didn't keep receipts for my acupuncture treatments and purchases of vitamins and other things we tried. Like my husband and I say, if it had worked, it would have all been worth it, but since it didn't, it really sucks to think about all the other things we could have done with that money. Well, maybe at least we'll get some sort of tax break - I guess that's the small consolation prize like on those game shows where you could have won a brand new car but instead you are sent home with a can of Spam.

Can you really get a tax break for IVF?! Or are you joking around? I know we spent at least that much as well, and probably more since we had the donor cycle to cover as well...hard to believe and I try to not think about how much money is going out the door!

Yes, you can. The Internal Revenue Service lets you deduct medical costs as long as they are more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. Fertility treatments are included, so are acupuncture appointments and mileage for traveling to and from the doctor. You can even include trips to the dentist or eye doctor, expenses for contacts etc. I did not know about this until recently, but then again, I've never had this many medical expenses in one year. You should definitely look into it. If you google - deducting medical expenses from taxes - or similar searches, you can find a lot of good info.
