More Waiting

Nothing to freak out about but I spoke with my nurse today to get an update. Originally, the retrieval was scheduled for Thursday. I know how all that can change depending on how things go with the stims, so it's no big deal. I just had it in my head that it would be Thursday. But the nurse said now it's looking like retrieval will probably be Saturday or Sunday. Which is fine except that I already ordered the sperm - this part is all new to me - never had to coordinate delivery of sperm before - and it will stay frozen in its delivery container for 7 days - so that gives me until Sunday. If for some reason the retrieval is pushed back even further, then I'm screwed - but I'm thinking that my clinic can probably keep the sperm frozen somehow in their storage tanks, so maybe that's not even an issue - I have no idea. I'm trying not to freak out about it all.

So, we'll see. I guess I'll be continuing the lupron for a few nights longer.

Whew, I'm glad things are starting to move now. I have to say, though, it is odd to read a sentence about when "sperm will arrive." Keep breathing.... ((Hugs))

Definitely call the clinic to ask if they can hold your sperm for you! (I can't believe how expense that stuff is).

I feel your pain.
God, I hate waiting...

Riley, I'm sort of confused about the sperm issue. Fertility clinics all have liquid nitrogen tanks on site (which is how they freeze the leftover embryos), so when you send the sperm shouldn't matter unless you ship it out too late and it doesn't arrive in time for the egg retrieval.

My specimen shipped weeks before the egg retrieval and just sat in the liquid nitrogen tanks at CCRM until it was needed. And I had extra vials that weren't used by CCRM so my specimen just stayed at CCRM in their tanks onsite.

If they can transport ice cream and keep it frozen, surely they can transport frozen sperm and do so! So glad it's almost your time! Wishing you all the best!

Thanks for the info, Sky! Yeah, that's kindof what I was thinking. It was just that the sperm bank got me all wigged out because they kept emphasizing how their shipping container can only keep it frozen for 7 days at the right temp. I assumed my clinic could stick it in their tank, but you know how it is to worry about every little thing!

Ahhh, okay, now I see where you got confused. Yes, the tanks cryobanks use for shipping have only enough liquid nitrogen to last 7 days (sometimes 8, pushing it). But that ONLY means it has to be at your fertility clinic and the specimen removed from the cryobank's tank and put into the clinic's own liquid nitrogen tanks within the 7 days - otherwise the specimen thaws.

I used Fairfax and when they shipped out the tank last May to CCRM with the vials, I called CCRM to ensure A) they'd received the tank, B) proper donor number was listed on vials and C) they were moving the vials into their own tanks onsite and sending the tank back to Fairfax.

For your own peace of mind, call your fertility clinic and let them know the tank will arrive there on XXXX date and then call again on that date to confirm receipt and that they're housing in their own tanks and returning your tank to cryobank.

I'm a Type A personality - so checking up on all parties is just what I do. Normally IVF cycles take place ALL THE TIME with donor sperm and the clinics do this 24/7 and certainly know what to do. But when it's my money, I do a lot of policing. :)

So maddening, I hate that we can't nail down a date better for these transfers! I found out the day of every time, they narrowed it down but it was never for sure and the time was completely up in the air! I guess they are just trying to get it as perfectly timed as possible, but it makes planning difficult. Good luck, hope this weekend you end up with a huge batch of embies!

Sorry there's more waiting. But hopefully the frozen sperm thing shouldn't be a problem. (I like Maddy's analogy to ice cream). Maybe those folks delivering the sperm somehow think you're going to be keeping it in your living room!
